I'm building a computer and I was curious about something, If the heatsink that came with my CPU already has thermal interface material on it do I also have to apply some to the chip itself?
If a heatsink already has a preapplied thermal interface material, you do not need to buy any thermal paste.
While some PC builders argue that most preapplied TIM are crap, you don't need anything fancy unless you plan on overclocking. In other words, the stock paste is sufficient for building a simple computer.
