Need help shopping for a heatsink and fan combo?
I have a very basic heatsink and fan combo at the moment. Lately it has started to fail me, as I had to replace the fan. I couldn't find one the same size as before so I had to replace it with a smaller one. Now I know that I must shop for a better heatsink and fan. Can anyone help me out by giving me any suggestions as to what kind of heatsink and fan combo would be great for dissipating the heat from an AMD Athlon 64 3400 Processor? I am looking for one that uses the heatpipe technology and hopefully has a large fan, as those tend to keep the processor cooler under more stress. I shop at Newegg and I just wanted to hear some suggestions from computer owners such as myself.
Actually, I have a custom-built PC. So I don't really have a manufacturer.
Heat pipe type solutions do not involve a fan - they are totally radiator inspired. And often they do not work as well as a heat sink + fan.
Look at newegg for Zalman or Thermaltake brands, they both have a very good reputation.
Be aware that when you replace the heat sink, you have to clean the former gunk off the cpu chip and apply fresh thermal paste, such as Artic Silver 5 [just the merest dab - too much is bad - about the size of a medium grain of rice].
