There are five factors you need to know about when printing photos.
The quality of the paper, inks, the quality of the source of the image (camera, scanner etc). the monitor (cheap LCD monitors are useless for showing how a print will look) & printer settings.
This will be quite a lengthy answer as it is not as simple as it seems.
Firstly to get the best quality pictures you will need a good quality image source. A print is only as good as the original image. Rubbish in rubbish out is the saying.
When looking for a good quality camera the number of megapixels is NOT the primary criteria. A £1,000 6 megapixel camera will generally give a much better quality image than a £120 8 megapixel camera.
So quality of paper is vital, the type of paper you use is vital, ink is vital & finally printer settings are vital.
Assuming you have the best quality camera you can afford I'll now concentrate on the printing side of things.
Paper? in general a good quality matte photo paper will give you sharper prints than a gloss one. If you are framing your photos and putting them behind glass then I would use 120 gm coated paper for your Epson ( have used Epson printers for a decade or more & currently use an Epson R1800).
Set your paper settings in the printer settings to the best quality matte paper ( R1800 has a 'archival matte' setting).
Set the print quality to 'Best Photo' and that will give you the highest quality images your printer can give.
You could also print two test prints and compare them. Set one print to 'photo' & the other to 'best photo' & see if you can see any difference, if not then do not use the 'best photo' setting as on some of the Epson printers you will be using up to twice as much ink.
